Heck Foods Meaty Sausages Review

A little while ago we reviewed the new vegetarian range from Heck, and as they're so well-known for their flavoursome meaty sausages and we have 3 meat-eaters here, it would have been remiss not to take a look at those too.

We were sent 5 different varieties of sausage to try - Zesty Chicken, Heck 97%, Fair & Square 97%, Smoky Paprika Chicken and Chicken Italia.

Heck Zesty Chicken Chipolata Sausages (10 sausages/340g for £3).

I wasn't sure what the reaction to these would be, as they are quite lemony and also contain watercress, so they are very different to a standard chicken sausage. My younger children ate them, but there was definitely some confusion and a lot of questions! Very Summery and ideal in a pasta salad or sausage sandwich with salad. They'll be a great accompaniment to lighter grains such as Quinoa or Cous Cous. Gluten-free and dairy-free.

Heck 97% Sausages (6 sausages/400g for £3).

97% pork shoulder sausages, these are really a classic. Tasty, big fat sausages that really make a great sandwich, toad-in-the-hole, cooked breakfast - the list is endless. My partner and small boys thought these were delicious, possibly the best sausages they've ever eaten. Gluten-free and dairy-free.

Fair & Square 97% Sausage (4 square sausages/400g for £3).

Very similar to the Heck 97% Sausage, but without a casing and in a far handier shape for a butty. My partner is Scottish and adores square sausage, he can't understand why it isn't more popular down here. An absolute win all round. My children loved these too. Gluten-free.

We had promised the children a barbeque, so the rest of the chipolata sausages were cooked outside. Well, nearly outside. Naturally it lashed it down....barbeque on the back porch!

Smoky Paprika Chicken Chipolata Sausages (10 sausages/340g for £3).

Not too spicy, but with a little kick of paprika for a Spanish-style warmth. My youngest wasn't quite so keen on these, but my partner really liked them, so he didn't mind. Great for a salad or pasta dish, they are ideal for a tomato-based sauce, but really will work well with rice too. Lovely in a bun with salad and tomato. Wheat-free, Gluten-free and Dairy-free.

Chicken Italia Chipolata Sausages (10 sausages/340g for £3).

This is a really different chicken sausage with mozzarella, basil and tomatoes. Bursting with flavour and definitely part of my partner's conversion to enjoying a chicken sausage. My 7 year old loved these, my 6 year old again wasn't so keen. As expected these will work excellently in a warm pasta dish. Gluten-free.

All of the Heck sausages were a hit with my partner and 7 year old, and the variety was impressive. There are some really different sausages there, which can give you a very different result whether you are creating a 15 ingredient sausage casserole or just having a simple hot dog. The price is fair exchange for such good quality food, and if you buy online at Heck you can get 10 packs for £25 with free delivery, making the Heck sausages comparable to a low or mid-range supermarket own brand, but with a lot more flavour and often more actual meat for your money.

We also reviewed the new Heck vegetarian range - and the Gourmet Goat's Cheese burgers are now my partner's all-time favourite burger. Not a bad accolade for something with no meat...

We were sent our Heck sausages for review.

  1. I only discovered heck sausages last week, chicken paprika and I love them already. Following Slimming World I needed a low syn alternative for my regular sausages and these are now it. Can't wait to try to pork ones and the Italia ones which Ive ordered on my food shop this week.

    1. Oooh that's good! The chicken sausages definitely have far less fat than most I've ever cooked. My partner likes a nice marbled sausage, but he can do with putting back on a few lbs! :D

  2. I have never tried these but keep seeing them about. They sound very tasty...I think the Smoky Paprika Chicken Chipolata Sausages would go down well here x

    1. The Smoky Paprika Chipolatas are one of their most popular ranges. I think they'd make an excellent Spanish style sausage casserole :)

    1. Oh I'm with you there. A sausage butty on a Sunday is an awesome start to a lazy day :D
A few people have said about Slimming World, and they are really low in fat, but as far as I can see, no compromise on taste :)
