Morrisons New Home Delivery Review and Chinese meal recipe

Morrisons are the latest supermarket to offer home delivery, it's being rolled out across the country and as Manchester is one of the first places where it's available, I was given the opportunity to review. I've done my main food shopping online most of the time since I had our last child.

Online food shopping saves me hours each week, I could never get all of our shopping for one week in one trolley so would have to go at least twice a week, I'd have to take 2 small children with me, and frankly when I've walked all around the supermarket, carried it to the van, driven it home, carried it into the house, then put it all away, I'm shattered!

Signing up to Morrisons Online took about 5 minutes, and then I was ready to go. Having a larger than average family sadly means a larger than average food bill. This was my main shop of the fortnight and came in at £230.48. A fairly thorough test. It took me no longer to order than at my usual online supermarket despite it being brand new to me.

Morrisons have collaborated with Ocado in this venture, so two of my favourite touches are there. The itemised shopping list with everything listed in the order it goes out of date is genius and I love it. I can, at a glance, see exactly what meal we should probably be having sooner rather than later. The bags are colour coded for cupboard, freezer and fridge - which is brilliant when you have as much shopping at me. I can see instantly how many more bags full of shopping I have to try and squeeze into my fridge.

Morrisons Home Delivery Review Shopping Bags

Morrisons are well known for the pride they take over fresh produce, their cheese, meat and bakery counters are one of the reasons we choose to shop there, so I was interested to see if the quality was going to be as good as when I am standing there in person.

I was really pleased. Fresh Cream Muffins were on special offer at only 87p for 2, so I ordered everybody one, and they were in perfect condition, you'd never know they'd travelled. The bananas were in a bubble wrap bag, which is  great idea  - they should probably sell them like that anyway. The strawberries were incredibly fresh, large and tasty, and the pizzas were loaded with toppings which were spaced really nicely and evenly.

I was very happy with the Stilton. The pack was exactly right for what I'd ordered, and not sweaty at all. Morrisons do some lovely cheeses, but I wish they wouldn't put them in that annoying cling film which doesn't help lifespan at all.

I also ordered lamb ribs cut to order from the Butcher. This is a new thing for me, I've never bought them before, but my 5 year old loves ribs.

I was really pleased with the quality and cut. £6 for 2 packs was enough for all 5 meat eaters. They turned out to be stunningly easy to cook, and were a definite hit.

My family love Chinese food, and take away is an expensive do for 9, so I usually cook our own version, and I stocked up on fresh ingredients.

Mushroom Foo Yung and Stir Fry Noodles

For our variation of Mushroom Foo Yung

Ingredients

Light soy sauce
Vegetable boullion (or stock)
Cornflour

6 eggs
Spring onions, sliced
Beansprouts
Mushrooms, sliced

Method

Make up around 500-750ml of boullion (or stock) and add a good glug of soy sauce. Add 1/2-1 teaspoon of cornflour and heat while stirring (or microwave for a few seconds in between) for a minute or two until it thickens. Put aside.

Mix the egg with a dash of soy sauce, and put about 1/3 of the mixture into a frying pan over a medium heat. As soon as it starts to cook drop on a handful of spring onion, mushrooms and beansprouts. Fold the top over and press.

When the egg is cooked take it out and put it into a loaf or lasagne type baking tin and pour over 1/3 of the gravy. Repeat 2 more times until all the mix and gravy are gone. Keep warm in the oven, or cover and place in the fridge until you're ready (up to 48 hours) to reheat and eat.

The Chow Mein Stir Fry Noodles really are simple.

Ingredients

Stir Fry Veg
Fresh noodles
Chow mein sauce

Method

It really is as simple as pouring it all in the wok and heating it up - veg first until it starts to cook, then sauce, then fresh noodles for the last 3 -4 minutes until warmed through.

The Mushroom Foo Yung ingredients cost around £4.00, and the Chow Mein Stir Fry £7.75. The entire meal was £11.75, which works out at £1.30 each - just over the 'feed 4 for a fiver' and all 9 of us ate a hearty meal - every speck was gone.

Overall I was very impressed with Morrisons Online Shopping. I really like the 1 hour time slot which can cost as little as £1, the itemised dated receipt and the quality of the food. The variety is excellent and the prices were very good. In £230 of shopping we only had one damaged item, which I passed back to the driver for a full refund.

I love Morrisons vegetarian sausages and burgers, their breads and fresh pizzas, but the nearest large store is a little way away from me. Online worked incredibly well and I'll definitely use them again.

I was given some vouchers to review online food shopping with Morrisons, needless to say we had to add to that!

  1. Sounds like a great delivery service, I'm hoping they will be doing us soon as I don't think any of the other supermarkets come close in the quality of the fresh produce. Love the colour coding on the bags, what a great idea!

    1. I do agree - I used to use Morrisons all the time, and it was only the lack of online shopping that's stopped me. I've already placed my second order with them :D

    1. Thanks Eileen - that's lovely coming from you! I'm loathe to say Mushroom Foo Yung because I know it's probably a very 'British' version :D

  3. I can't wait until they start delivering in my area....The nearest one is about an half hour bus ride away so it's too much faff on to go. It looks like a great service x

    1. I'm really impressed. I'll definitely be more confident ordering meat for my meat-eaters for starters. Our nearest big Morrisons is a good 20 minutes drive each way when there's no traffic, and I have to pass another 2 supermarkets to get there - plus I can only pull 1 trolley! :D

  4. They started home deliveries in Nottingham back in January, we never use anyone else now. I think Tesco's, Asda etc. need to 'buck their ideas up'!

    2. Thank you Ian! I think the attention to detail is one of the things that makes it so great - the little touches, and of course the quality and price :)

  5. I've heard about Morrison's delivery but we don't have it down here yet, although it's only a 5 min drive away. Delivery sounds great though, love the colour coded bags and your chinese meals look great - I do love a good veggie stir fry!

    1. Thanks Fiona! I'd eat veggie stir fry every day I think - although the children complain that I dare to put veg in with noodles :D

    1. Our proper one was far too far to walk and it would be 2 busses, so this is great for people near me who don't ever have access to a vehicle.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)
