LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari LaFerrari set 75899 Review

Some things pop up when you least expect them.....

While fetching rabbit food today my other half popped into Smyths to have a quick LEGO browse and found the brand new LEGO Speed Champions sets on sale. Guessing that we must have somehow missed the official release he only bought the LaFerrari set 75899 (he needs the wheel arches for a project).

The bricks arrive in 3 bags but I didn't get a photo at the time, so here they are in one bag ready for our 6 1/2 year old to have a turn and rebuild the model.

It's as you'd expect a fairly quick build, with a few really nice, interesting touches and new parts. New (at least to us and possibly the world), are the drivers glass canopy windscreen, complicated shaped wheel arch and the brilliant interchangeable hubcaps!

There's a nice use of upside down SNOT bricks to create a really detailed side to the car, which even makes it look great underneath. It's incredibly intricate, with a rewarding 3D diamond and shaping.

So, the car.... It looks great, it's very detailed and rewarding. For such a quick build you have a very nice model that also serves as a really sturdy toy. It's really quite hard to take apart! This is a LEGO car that will not fall to bits if your 4 year old child wants to play 'cars' with it. Brilliant.

There's a complaint with this set - the exhaust sticker for the rear end is off-centre...tsk...

No prizes for spotting it doesn't exactly match the sleek lines of the car it's modelling, but it's instantly recogniseable. The stickers really are excellent, with a very intricate dashboard - and a speedo that doesn't match the calm expression on the drivers face...

There's a driver who loves their car....

LEGO Speed Champions is a brand new range for 2015. There will be 7 sets with 8 different fast cars, a truck and pit crew. Prices vary depending on the size of the set. The LaFerrari set 75899 retails at £12.99 and we make it 170 or 180 pieces (it's very late, we can't count again, and I will win that bet).

All of the Speed Champions sets have a recommended age of 7+ and we feel that is spot on.
