Jurassic World LEGO with a Dilophosaurus and a couple of Raptors

The Jurassic World movie is out today and what better way to celebrate than to play with some LEGO? We were asked if we'd like to review the Raptor Rampage set 75917, and my partner received the Dilophosaurus Ambush set 75916 for his birthday.

Raptor Rampage set 75917 contains Clare, Owen, an ACU Trooper, the two Raptors - Delta and Blue, plus the Mobile Vet Unit with a rotating shooter and Owen's motorbike. The build is split into 2 books, surprising for what is only a 324 piece model, and is recommended for children aged 6-12. I think there are a couple of aspects of the build that maybe need a 6 year old or up, but otherwise it's okay and possible for children a little younger.

This set has 3 minifigures, and they're obviously characters from Jurassic World. The two named figures (Clare and Owen) have double-sided faces, but both of Clare's seem very worried! The ACU Trooper has his tranquiliser gun and really intricate protective vest.

The Raptors are excellent. Articulated with an opening mouth, and familiar from the sets released 3 years ago - with the new colouring and the Raptor Headgear from the movie.

The Mobile Vet Unit uses a lot of SNOT bricks and Technic LEGO to create a really chunky off-road vehicle. Very strong and ideal for children playing dinosaurs, it'll withstand a lot of crashes - and Raptor attacks.

The roof of the Mobile Vet Unit is removeable for play, and the rear makes good use of train doors to form a really very familar 'ambulance' shape. These are great because they open right out and give good access to the inside.

The inside of the Mobile Vet Unit is a little disappointing I think.  There is a rotating shooter which slides into the back really neatly, also has a stand and can be mounted on the roof....

....And there are some computers which are mounted too high for the minifigures to use them, and that's it. I feel there should be more.  This is really mainly an empty box, and doesn't excite me as much as 'Mobile Vet Unit' would imply. Where are my vet posters, equipment, hooks for syringes and tranquiliser guns? Maybe when I see the movie it'll all become clear....

The entire vehicle back removes nicely as a dinosaur container, and it's well enough secured that it doesn't fall off when you don't want it to, but it's not really big enough for dinosaurs! Although maybe at least they can reach to see the computer monitors...

A great chunky vehicle and a lovely play set, which really will give pleasure to the children and the Jurassic World fans among us, but I'd have liked a more exciting interior to my van, and maybe an opening side. I think this set at £49.99 does not offer best value for money because there just isn't enough there.

My children and I gave my partner the Dilophosaurus Ambush set 75916 for his birthday last month. The set has a Dilophosaurus, ACU Trooper and named character Grey in his Gyrosphere, plus the Jurassic World 4x4 off-road vehicle.

The Dilophosaurus is brilliant. He actually only has a different head to the Raptors, but the colours work very well to make him really stand out. The finer details in the Jurassic world LEGO are beautifully done, with perfect stickers and great outfits.

The Jurassic World 4x4 is a cool vehicle with a working winch and an exploding function at the rear when a dinosaur attacks. The exploding function doesn't amuse me so much, but our 5 year old loves it. It's a nice looking and fairly standard vehicle, with a good interior for rescuing passers-by.

I like the Dilophosaurus Ambush set 75916 and think it represents good value for money. The 4 x 4 is a great plaything and at 248 pieces you are paying that premium for movie tie-in, but not excessively. I feel that the 2 smaller Jurassic World LEGO sets actually offer best value and if I had £50 to spend on dinosaurs, those sets would be my choice.

Jurassic World LEGO is bound to be a huge hit with younger children, whether because of the movie or because they just like dinosaurs - dinosaur LEGO has returned again and again and is always a seller. From what we've seen the LEGO Jurassic World models are plenty strong enough for children who are over 3 but below the recommended building age to play without frustration.

    1. My 6 year old would love to get the lot! He's going to be out of luck too though :D I honestly think the two smaller sets are really very good and at £20 and £30 make fantastic Dinosaur and movie playsets :)
