Naughty Monkey and The New Year Beast are from two series of books retelling ancient Chinese tales. They are printed in both English and Simplified Chinese with beautiful illustrations. A great way to learn more about Chinese culture, and perfect for anyone wanting to introduce their child to the Chinese language.
Written by Su Yen Hu and Lihui Wang, the text is perfect for my competent 7 year old to read aloud independently, and my 5 year old understood the stories and took a lot from them, and so did I. They are fabulous legends and traditional tales, and these versions are very well done.
We have reviewed these books fully in this post, and I was most impressed with the way the translations are done so clearly, my children enjoyed trying to say the Chinese words, and understood exactly what they were trying to say.
The CD's at the back of the book are spoken in beautiful English and very clear Chinese, so again, it was easy to follow the storyline and even recognise some of the words.
Naughty Monkey (£12.99) is from The Stories Of Animal Signs series, and The New Year Beast (£14.99) is from The Chinese Festivals Series, and both are hardbacked and published by Snowflake Books, the specialists in 'Learning Through Legends'. Available now from all good bookshops. They're best suited to children aged around 5-15, but incredibly captivating for any age group.
Snowflake Books have very kindly offered a copy each of Naughty Monkey and The New Year Beast for one of my readers.
