LEGO Star Wars Krennic's Imperial Shuttle Review set 75156

My 8 year old is a massive fan of Star Wars, so when he found out we'd be reviewing the LEGO star Wars Krennic's Imperial Shuttle, he practically waited by the door for the postman. Taken from the storyline of the next Star Wars movie, Rogue One, the shuttle set has 5 minifigures plus a K-2SO droid, giving a vehicle which is actually a functioning play set once built.

Krennic's Imperial Shuttle is one of the larger new Star Wars LEGO sets with 863 pieces. It also has some trickier techniques and bits where you need 3 hands, so it's recommended for age 9+.

Inside the box we have only 7 numbered bags and 1 sheet of stickers as well as the instruction booklet. Not too intimidating to newer builders.

My 8 year old couldn't wait to open the set, and set to work immediately. He completed the build in 3 sessions after school, and only needed a little help with some tight sections where several elements are fixed together using one hollow rod. A bit of wiggling and lining up and he was off again...he freely admits it was complicated though.

It is an understandably complex body, which gives a very sturdy model. Despite it's appearance those wings are unlikely to detach without a lot of mishandling or a serious drop.

When complete, with the wings attached, the model is really big - 56cm across in flying mode. Director Krennic takes prime spot in his cockpit at the front, and you can fit 4 other figures inside the model, there's seating at the front for the 2 Death Troopers, and the droid K-2SO in the side.

The whole sides and front of the model open out for play, and to access the interior. It's really well done with pivots and hinging, and very secure. There's also a ramp at the back and interior storage space. (Click on the image to enlarge)

Obviously the wings raise and drop, and they stay put pretty well. The whole shuttle rests on landing skids which retract for flight, and the Imperial Shuttle has 2 spring loaded shooters.

The minifigures in this set are great. Characters from the upcoming Star Wars movie, Rogue One, we have Bodhi Rook and Pao, Director Krennic and 2 Imperial Death Troopers, plus a K-2SO.

Bodhi Rook and Pao have great printing, and brilliant backpacks which make good use of some existing elements. Their hair and hat are (to my knowledge) new and unique, and the hair at least should please a lot of people hoping to minifig themselves...

Director Krennic and the Death Troopers are their adversaries, and sufficiently fierce. The Death Trooper's printing and helmets are beautiful really, very intricate and fine. This is where you really see the obvious differences between LEGO and inferior products.

Special mention to the droid, K-2SO. Pin sharp printing, he's very impressive and quite sinister - I can't wait to see how he's played out in the movie.

A rewarding build, and ss a shelf model it's impressive, and my 6 and 8 year olds have also played with it for hours without any big rebuilds. It's heavy, as you'd expect, but actually a lot more portable than it looks, it balances very well when a child is holding it with one hand from underneath 'flying' it around the room.

LEGO Star Wars Krennic's Imperial Shuttle is recommended for builders aged around 9+, and I agree with that. It has 863 pieces including 6 figures, and an rrp of £79.99 which is a very fair price for the set you get. Available now from all good toyshops and online, including from LEGO.com with free shipping (and often a free gift), where you can also earn reward points for free LEGO!
