20 Questions To Ask your Kids - with my 8 and 6 1/2 year old boys...

It seems at the moment that everyone is asking their children some seemingly easy questions, and then posting the answers to social media. The replies are very often cute and charming, and are a great keepsake to remind yourself of the little things your children say and do which get forgotten over time.

Here is a printable list of 20 Questions To Ask Your Children, which I have shared with my 8 and 6 1/2 year old monsters darlings...

Q1. What is your favourite colour?
My 8 year old has been very honest - purple - even though some people say it's a girl colour. My 6 year old paradoxically chose green, which he specifically can't really see (3 of my sons are colour-blind), so your guess is as good as mine there...

Q2. Who is your best friend?
McKenzie and Jack. My boys have lots of friends, they go to a happy school.

Q3. What is your favourite TV programme?
They both said Adventure Time. I'm pleased with this answer.

Q4. What do you want to be when you grow up?
My 8 year old isn't sure. My 6 year old has wanted to be a policeman for a long time, and I hope he gets his wish, although the idea terrifies me as people seem to have less and less respect for Police Officers all the time.

Q5. What car do you want to have when you grow up?
My 8 year old said he only knows Lamborghini, and I think his brother may have copied. They may need to either raise their job aspirations or lower their expectations!

Q6. If you could go anywhere in the world on holiday, where would you go?
My 8 year old says Spain, my 6 year old says France - more realistic dreams, hurrah!

Q7. Do you want to get married one day?
Both boys gave a simple 'Yes'. I am already looking forward to their weddings more than they will ever appreciate. I'm embracing the idea of my kids growing up, and I'm good with it.

Q8. How many children would you like?
I was very intrigued by what they'd say. Coming from a large family, did it put them off children? No. Phew! They both said 2.

Q9. What age are you when you become an adult?
My 8 year old put 1718 and my 6 year old suggested 20. With older siblings aged 16, 17, 18 and 22, I think this is fascinating...it's also impressively correct!

Q10. What are you good at?
My 8 year old wrote 'eating'. He really is an amazing eater and will try absolutely anything with gusto. His disappointed face on the rare occasions he doesn't like a meal breaks my heart. He loves restaurant reviews more than anything else.
My 6 year old wrote 'running'. This is true, he's an excellent runner. He's also a person who has to be able to get to an exit or he panics. This combination is why we love his Watchu GPS Locator Smartwatch so so so so very much.

Q11. If you had a superpower, what would it be?
My 8 year old was very sensible and wrote 'to be invisible'. Awesome. I can talk about this with him for ages. My 6 year old showed we were approaching his concentration limit by writing 'To barf out lasers'. I will make him talk about this with me for ages, until he's very bored of it and wishes he'd put something sensible....

Q12. If you had one wish, what would it be?
Obviously enjoying his weekend, my 8 year old said 'schools closed'. My 6 year old showed a side I hadn't realised he had, by writing 'to be rich'. Clearly Mummy has to do a lot more of these paid posts, or else we need to send him up chimneys.

Q13. What do I do as a job?
My 8 year old rarely misses a trick, so I was not surprised when he said 'Blogger'. I never realised my 6 year old thought I was cool until today, I'm so proud. He said 'youtuber'.

Q14. What are you scared of?
Again my 8 year old was very honest. He wrote 'Dark'. He is scared of the dark, they both are. My 6 year old clearly didn't want to directly address this question at all, and instead opted for the comedy answer, writing his brother's name. Cheeky as it is, this is fine by me, I'd never pressure them to talk in this way, they have too many demons. I know he's not really scared of his brother...

Q15. What is your favourite song?
My 8 year old opted for a disappointing 'non', while his 6 year old brother said One Direction - not technically a song, but enough, although personally I think he prefers Little Mix or Adele. I need to get a radio back into my kitchen.

Q16. What is your favourite class at school?
My 8 year old opted for Art - he does love drawing, although he's very precise, so never finishes anything in class time. My 6 year old said 'non'. It's bravado because I know he loves school - music especially.

Q17. What is something I always say to you?
I love this answer! I expected 'tidy up' or 'stop messing about', instead we get what I say to them every morning when it's time to leave for school. My 8 year old wrote "Time to boogie" and my 6 year old '"lets boogie". I guess I hadn't even realised that I said it!

Q18. What is the hardest thing you've ever had to do?
Both of my boys thankfully kept this one nice and shallow. Maths was my 8 year old's answer, and my 6 year old chose jigsaws, although his spelling was fantastic with 'chigsors', so maybe actually writing 'jigsaws' is at least as hard as doing them....

Q19. What makes you happy?
Food was my 8 year old's answer. He had eaten plenty of tea, so he wasn't particularly hungry, I promise! My 6 year old put his favourite occupation 'playing on my computer'.

Q20. What makes you sad?
My 8 year old didn't want to go into depth with this question, so I helped and suggested they write whatever made them cry last. 'Being told off' and 'someone punching me' were the given answers....

My boys both really enjoyed doing the 20 questions, and I've loved reading and thinking about their answers. It's a lot more telling than you'd initially think, and I look forward to asking them the same questions again in a couple of years time.

Doing the 20 questions has shown me the sad, in that my 8 year old finds some subjects too upsetting to broach, and the happy - both boys are proud of their skills and excited about having their own families when they grow up. It's also shown that my 6 year old thinks I'm a cool You Tuber!

This post is in collaboration with Shepherds Friendly Society who offer a range of savings plans including a Junior Isa, they kindly made the printable I shared with you.

  1. I love your boys' answers! It's not surprising that there were things they didn't want to discuss but lovely that there are so many happy (and a few silly!) answers too. It's funny that our kids both decided that adulthood started at the same age!

    1. Hahaha - I was surprised there weren't more silly answers to be honest! I love that our two younger ones said 17 and the bigger ones 20 - it's really telling about how they mature and view age :)
