Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes DVD Review and Giveaway

The latest release from Entertainment One is Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. A two-part animated movie based on the classic collection of stories by Roald Dahl, and a huge hit at Christmas on TV, Revolting Rhymes comes to DVD on 6th February, and is available now on Digital Download.

The film has a warm and familiar style, as the animation is by Magic Light Pictures, the team behind award-winning films The Gruffalo and Stick Man. There is the usual light-hearted humour, and fantastic expression on the faces of the characters.

The British cast is great (everyone loves Roald Dahl) and includes my 8 year old son's favourite current children's author David Walliams, as well as Tamsin Grieg, Rob Brydon, Dominic West and others.

First published in 1982 Revolting Rhymes was written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by his long-time sidekick Quentin Blake. Featuring familiar fairytale characters, but with their stories re-written into verse, and with a very different and imaginative alternative ending each time.

Will Little Red Riding Hood become a meal for the Big Bad Wolf? Can Snow White out-wit her evil stepmother? Is the house of bricks strong enough to protect the Little Pig? How can Jack avoid the Giant and find his golden treasure? Who will Cinderella marry?

Revolting Rhymes has the wolf as narrator, and he interrupts the flow of the story with ad lib comments that are very funny. My 8 year old especially loved Revolting Rhymes and laughed aloud all through it. His 6 year old brother and I also enjoyed it, and being broken into 2 x 30 minute segments means it's really handy watching before story and bed.

The animation is superb, and the characters are warm and funny. Although the stories are a little bit darker than your average children's tale nowadays, it's with humour and always very over-the-top and unrealistic. Most children will be familar with Roald Dahl's style and know it isn't all fluffy bunnies and cotton candy.

Revolting Rhymes has a runtime of 60 minutes (2 x 30 minute episodes), and is PG rated. It is out now on Digital Download, and will be available on DVD from Monday 6th February rrp £8.99, courtesy of Entertainment One.
