SSshh! Don’t Wake Dad! Board Game Giveaway from Drumond Park (age 5+)

Last March we reviewed Sshh! Don't Wake Dad! for Drumond Park and it's remained a favourite all year. This is a board game with a twist in the shape of a sleeping animated Dad, who snores his way through the game and makes everyone jump whenever he is accidentally woken by the sneaky cake thief...

You can find my full review of Sshh! Don't Wake Dad! here, but gameplay is very simple. Players use a spinner to move along the track that snakes across the board, heading for the fridge and the delicious treats it holds. Each square you land on is a risk and you can get sent back to the start quite easily.

Most spaces give a number of times that you have to press Dad's alarm clock - risking setting it ringing and waking him each time. If you are actually on the bed then you can be wiped right off the board by his flailing arms as he spins round - making the children howl with laughter. Then you have to go back to the start.

The board only has a few spaces, and each time you are sent back, you get a card protecting you from whatever hazard it was that caught you out last time, so play is actually very quick and no-one minds being sent back - well, not too much!

This is a great game for 2-4 players aged 5+, teaching turn taking and 'how to lose'. These are both skills a younger child won't find come naturally. The first time they're sent back they might complain, but it is a part of this game and soon becomes second nature.

Sshh! Don't Wake Dad! is a great game for my 7 and 8 year old boys to play together, and the sound effects (e.g. a cat howling, everything being knocked over and Dad snoring etc) really make it loads of fun.
