The Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazars Revenge Jack's Pirate Ship Play Set (age 4+) packaging took ages to open, so you'll need scissors and 10 minutes on Christmas morning, but scores well for mainly using card and paper string which can be recycled.
The ship is a good size with plenty of room for play. There are very few moving parts, only the ship's wheel and the wheels, and the main sail. This makes it more basic, but also very sturdy and harder to break. It's a solid design which should be good for more boisterous 4 year olds.
The pirate ship playset comes complete with a Jack Sparrow figure, cannon and 2 firing 'cannonballs', plus a shark.
The cannon has a powerful shot actually, using a spring-loaded firing mechanism that's standard for children's toys and easy to get the hang of.
The shark is a cute kind of ferocious, and a bit rubbery.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge Battle Figure 5-Pack (age 4+) is, as you'd guess, a set of 5 sculpted 3-inch figures from the movie. The 5 characters included are Jack Sparrow, Captain Salazar, Henry, Carina and a ghost crew member.
Bizarrely this packaging also took some opening time, and has more plastic than the ship, but also more small parts, so that's expected.
The figures themselves are nicely painted and well-balanced for standing up. Each figure is articulated at the hips, shoulder and neck, although some of the heads don't turn far because of the longer hair getting in the way.
Each holds a sword and has a hand that will hold the ships wheel or depicts a particular gesture - a fist or Jack Sparrow's wriggly fingers for example.
My 8 year old wants to know why Jack Sparrow won't sit down nicely too? He can't join them for a picnic. They have holes in the base of their feet because there is a peg for them to stand on by the ships wheel.
The quality of the plastic is good and feels like it will last well. The figures have a softer texture and are a little bendy, so will survive robust play. The printing and colouring of the plastic is excellent, it's actually quite tricky to achieve things like the ghost's disappearing legs...
My boys are 7 and 8, and both were anxious to play with these sets and played really nicely together for around an hour, and setting up scenes every now and again afterwards like a chess match I didn't understand. The characters all had voices too, which is actually one of my favourite things to listen in to as a Mum...
