Inside the box you have the inflatable itself - and you will need to blow it up but it's very quick! There is also a drive unit which is attached to the base of the inflatable, a handset, instruction manual and repair patch.
Inflating is really quick - only about 4 or 5 big breaths. You'll need a small screwdriver to open the battery compartments - there are 2 compartments on the drive unit which takes 4 x AA batteries, and 1 on the controller for 2 more AA batteries.
Mel, Tom and Fluffy are all suitable for anyone aged 3+ and stand 34-35cm tall. They are radio controlled via a familiar style of handset which is very easy to use with only 2 directions - forwards or reverse with spin to change direction.
The inflatables are not heavy and won't hurt if they run into you. They're well-balanced and virtually impossible to tip over. Battery life is very good for such a lively and well-used toy, but I recommend considering rechargeable batteries.
The plastic the inflatables are made from feels quite thin, but is very strong and we've only ever had 1 puncture so far despite having the Star Wars inflatables since last year. I'm impressed. They take quite a lot of robust use.
Seams have a good hem and are well protected. Obviously you shouldn't pick the inflatables up by their horn, ears or arms if you want to extend the time before you have to start patching them up...
The 2 minions 'talk', with a series of different Minion phrases. You can turn this off on the drive unit underneath the inflatable, there is also an on/off switch. Before use you need to 'pair' the controller and drive unit by turning it on and pressing 'forward' for 2 seconds. It's so simple that anyone can have fun as soon as the batteries are in.
They run around pretty fast and Fluffy has a slight rocking motion as she sets off which is quite horse-like. We've done a lot of racing the last couple of days. Unicorns aren't as quick as you might think.
Here's a look at the Despicable Me 3 Minions Tom and Mel, and Fluffy the unicorn in action... and a couple of races to see who is fastest.... (it's not Fluffy!).
We've had loads of fun with these. Occasionally the minions arms catch together and it always looks like dancing. They're hilarious and racing them around the house has entertained my children as much as making them twirl together. Fluffy is a little bit temperamental and we've had to re-insert the batteries randomly a couple of times, but that worked and otherwise we couldn't be happier.
Mel, Tom and Fluffy have an rrp of £29.99 each and are currently reduced to buy now instore and online from The Entertainer at £24.99 each as part of their Super Saturday event this weekend!
If you are a more of a Star Wars fan then we have also reviewed Bladez Toyz R2-D2 and BB-8 R/C Inflatables.
