The kids are back to school and you'll have to wash all of those 'white' polo shirts covered in whiteboard marker, paint and an unidentifiable selection of foods. Hurrah! But hang on, it's not just the kids who manage to stain their clothes...

With children life is all about stains and it starts long before they can even walk, but it doesn't stop when you become an adult. As a child you can get away with it, my son doesn't care at all, but when you are grown up having a stain can be incredibly embarrassing.

I used to suffer from nosebleeds a lot as a teenager and younger adult, and I was always quite well-endowed in the chest department. Several times I realised people were staring, but didn't realise why until that night when I took off my t-shirt and discovered I had spatter stains on the points of my ample bosom. I think more than one person assumed I was lactating pure blood. It probably would have been as embarrassing for them to tell me, as it was for me to realise later.

Dr Beckmann set up a social experiment in Manchester to see how many people would be prepared to tell someone if they had a particularly awful embarrassing stain on their clothes. Would members of the public passing by be prepared to embarrass themselves by telling the actors about their stain? Would that number be different for men and women? Thankfully this is only chocolate!

I wish I could have watched the filming, secretly behind a bush, because it would have been hilarious. The results are a real surprise! Nice to know that some people were prepared to explain about the delicate nature of the stain. Shame on everyone who took a photo but didn't say anything though! I'd have hated if people had photographed me with my nosebleed stains... fortunately smartphones didn't exist.

Stain Devils Survival Kit has 3 small bottles of pre-wash treatments which can remove just about any stain. There's one for marks left from fats and another which will delete felt tip and ink and both get to work within around 15 minutes. The third removes the more stubborn colourful food stains, but even that only needs to soak for around an hour. £3.99 for 2 x 50ml and 1 x 50g. Between them this pack will handle around 40 stains.

I've found that these are great for some stubborn food stains, including ketchup and coffee. All blood and most felt tip can be removed, although black whiteboard marker is often bombproof. They are very easy to use, just soak in a sink or bucket and then into the machine. No need for a hot wash either, so okay for some more delicate clothes.

Dr Beckmann Pre-Wash Stain Devils is my favourite. It has a pre-wash applicator on the bottle to rub it into your clothes, and it will get to work on most types of stain within 10-15 minutes. £2.29 250ml bottle which will treat loads of small stains. It contains no bleach, so is safe on colours and whites - although in our house it must be used mainly for white shirts...
