Mary And The Witch's Flower DVD and Book Giveaway

Mary And The Witch's Flower is a new DVD release from Studio Ponoc. Suitable for all of the family, but best suited to those school-aged or above, this is a beautiful animated retelling of the  book The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart. It features an amazing voice cast including Kate Winslett, Jim Broadbent and Ewen Bremner.

We were sent a pre-release copy of the movie to review and I watched it with my 8 and 9 year old boys. They both enjoy anime and a good fantastical story.

Mary And The Witch's Flower tells the tale of 10 year old Mary, who is living with relatives while she waits for her parents to return from working away. It's the school Summer holidays and she is bored and lonely, the most interesting thing in her day is being told folklore by the gardener.

There is a beautiful blue flower in the garden, and when Mary is sweeping and crushes a flower is when things start to get a bit weird. There is magic and mystery, myth and peril (although not particularly dangerous peril, so younger viewers will be okay), friendship and ultimately the end of an adventure and a return to reality.

Here's a quick look with the UK trailer for the movie...

We all enjoyed Mary And The Witch's Flower. The animation is great, with the familiar anime setting and a fantastic English voice cast. The characters are likeable and the story is action-packed, with plenty enough adventure to maintain anyone's interest. It's suitable for any age, although school-aged and older will understand more of the story.

The original storybook on which the film is based is a classic, The Little Broomstick. Written by Mary Stewart and illustrated by Shirley Hughes almost 50 years ago. Recommended for children aged around 9+ it retails at £6.99 rrp.

The DVD Mary And The Witch's Flower (rrp £9.99, 102 minutes, rated PG) and the book The Little Broomstick are both available now from bookshops and DVD sellers instore or online, including Amazon (*aff). To find out more check out the official Mary And The Witch's Flower website.
