Packaging is attractive for shopping, doesn't take too long to open and you can use it for storage although it's not very traditional. No batteries needed, but you will have to charge the drone for around 1 hour before use, so bear that in mind for Christmas morning.
All you have and all you need is the drone, some spare blades, a blade removal tool and the instructions, which are pretty minimal despite their size. By placing your hands in different places around the drone, it will trigger different sensors and this is how you perform tricks.
The drone charges via regular USB2, which is brilliant, flashing red until charged, when it changes to green. Underneath the drone is a tiny switch for off/charge or on/fly.
Turn on and then hold the drone by the top of the cage frame for 3 seconds to power up. When the light is solid green, let go. It'll drop and then as it comes back up you need to 'catch control of it' as if it was a ball, but without actually touching it.
Place a hand to the side or above/below to make the drone move away and therefore control it's direction. It's pretty tricky at first, but so instant to use and easy to grab hold of and start again, that no-one minds a few fails.
If you find it heading towards the ceiling or the corner then wait and it should come back down, but bear in mind it will leave a gap below itself, so if it flies above a shelf it won't simply hover back downwards.
Once you've managed to keep the drone in front of you at a decent height, you can attempt tricks. The only one we've really got the hang of is 'Dance', or spin. Cover three of the side sensors at once to do this - both hands and your body is best and you can be a few centimetres away from the drone for the sensors to 'see' you. As with all drones, this has ridiculously quick moving parts and they will grab and snag at hair or loose threads/tassels/string etc. Despite the cage my son leant over our drone and it caught his hair. It was a quick extraction, I was very impressed and the drone was unharmed. It did it's job and stopped before my son was injured, I just had to untangle the 2 dreadlocks it made. An accident, and much better than the outcome from other drone attacks we've had.
The Air Hogs Supernova is a very small small indoor remote control drone/flyer measuring 5.1" x 5.1" x 4.75" and it has a frequency range of 2.4 GHz. Charge time of 1 hour equates to easily 10 minutes flight time. It's really a lot of fun, super easy to use and although we are rubbish at it, we don't care.
