Suitable for independent readers aged around 6+, but a good short read for humans of any age, this is a book which rips apart The Princess and the Pea, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid. And it does it beautifully.
Don't Call Me Princess is narrated by a young girl, who speaks in rhyme and explains very succinctly why she doesn't want to be considered a princess. The illustrations are brilliant, with the girl's imagination showing us what she thinks when she hears fairy stories.
There is so much here to make children (and adults) think a little differently. Forget what you just accepted to be true and start to look beneath the surface, the reasons why, motivations and where it's leading. It's what we have tried to teach our children and I wish we had this book when our girls were young...
I truly love this book. It offers hope and understanding to any child who won't make it as a princess, or simply doesn't want to be one...

I'd like to think Rapunzel could have probably made an abseil rope out of her own hair, instead of waiting for the prince to ride by and rescue her.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what gets pointed out in the book.Great minds think alike!
DeleteSnow White, would have had some power and punish the wicked queen, turn her into a statue forever.
ReplyDeleteI would change Cinderella, I think she should stick up for herself more,I would have got my own back on the ugly sisters
ReplyDeleteWhen the witch offered Snow White the apple she would've said 'no, thanks I prefer bananas.'
ReplyDeleteCinderella - sometimes you just need to be forthright to BREAK the cycle - not always down to luck and dreaming
ReplyDeleteThe Princess and the Pea, she should have refused to get into the bed because it was far too high!
ReplyDeleteI'd change sleeping beauty... She should never have gone up them stairs!! The whole story would have been different if she didn't go up there!!!
ReplyDeleteI would change The Ugly Duckling and I would have them be more self-confident from the start, reminding all the others that looks change but you can't fix a bad attitude!
ReplyDeleteCinderella - her glass slippers! They were a bad translation it was originally fur in French. Who wears glass slippers!
ReplyDeleteSnow white if she was more of a veg then a fruit girl
ReplyDeleteI'd change the witch in Hansel and Gretel to be kinder! Who wouldn't be happy living in a house of gingerbread and sweets!
ReplyDeleteCinderella needs to stand up to her sisters
ReplyDeleteI would make Cinderella a lot tougher!
ReplyDeleteI wish Cinderella hadn't been so quick to serve her awful step mother and step sisters! She could have played little tricks on them instead x
ReplyDeleteI would make the men do the cleaning in Cinderella!
ReplyDeleteCinderella id make her stand up for herself
ReplyDeletePeter Pan I.d make him walk
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely make Cinderella tougher and tell her her stepsisters to do there own cleaning
ReplyDeleteCinderella should buy shoes that fit! Why does one fit and one not?
ReplyDeleteI'd change Cinderella - I'd give her more strength of character so she didn't need a man to rescue her from her situation, she would use her own intelligence and initiative
ReplyDeleteThe witch should have offered Snow White a slice of cake!!
ReplyDeleteI would give the Prince glasses, because he must have been blind not to realise who Cinderella was, just because she wasn't wearing her fancy dress.
ReplyDeleteAll princesses should stop waiting for a man to rescue them
ReplyDeleteThe Sleeping Beauty story from the book has been made into a short animation voiced by the author's daughter, who the narrator is based upon. It gives you a flavour of what the book is like
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/gD56pdPxR7c
Rapunzel should have given her step-mum a bit of a slap :p
ReplyDeleteI'd make rapunzel tie her own her to her bedleg, climb down it out of her window, then cut it off so that she's a free.
ReplyDeleteSnow white should have white hair not black hair!
ReplyDeleteSnow White
ReplyDeleteGoldilocks - She should eat the porridge and go
ReplyDeleteI would change the Little Mermaid (original version) so that she can go back to the sea instead of becoming foam when the prince chooses another girl.
ReplyDeleteI would make snow white tougher, and not touch food that was given to her, I say make your own
ReplyDeleteprincesses should stop waiting for a man to rescue them and find a way out
ReplyDeletesnow white
ReplyDeleteHansel and Gretel would have lived happily ever after in the gingerbread house.
ReplyDeleteSnow white - but I'd update her clothes :)
