Next Month Carlton Books release Space Race by Ben Hubbard. A fascinating fact book with augmented reality, which tells the story of man's obsession to reach the stars, from the very first satellite launch up to the present day. We've been sent a copy to review and Carlton Books have kindly offered a copy for one of my UK readers...

Space Race is supported by a free app. which you can download on Android or IOS and you need it to really get the most from the book, although there is still plenty to see and learn without using a screen.

Space Race is in chronological order and you start at the very beginning with background to the first satellites we sent into space. There is lots of information for any young explorer, and the tone is great for an adult to read too. The layout is fantastic for younger readers or browsers, who aren't yet confident readers.

There are plenty of images on every page and text is broken into manageable chunks, which are clearly labelled so that you know exactly what you are looking at. You get a real sense of progression through the book as technology and knowledge increase and evolve.

The images on the page are only half the story though. Throughout the book there are special AR images which can be read by the app. to produce the augmented reality. You obviously view this through your phone or tablet. It's incredibly easy to use, just point at the page!

There are several short videos which are fascinating to watch and bring the whole story to life for children, but I think the real novelty lies in the 3D models which appear on some of the pages. I adore the Lunar Module and being able to 'look' all around it is great.

It's also surprising to find out just how long the arms on a satellite are! My children were really interested in this one. We all hadn't realised just how much area the solar panels take up. It's hard to see in a photo, but very clear in the app., especially when you can 'move around' the model and look at it from different angles.

Space Race is a great book. It's really interesting, factually correct and full of illustrations and AR effects that really bring the whole story to life. It's a brilliant book for any youngster who is interested in space, astronauts and space travel.
