Written by series creator Julian Fellowes and starring the original cast, this is a full length movie version of the very popular TV series about life upstairs and below stairs in Downton Abbey, a large house and estate owned by the Crawley family in the early 20th century.
All of the characters are introduced really clearly, and we immediately see the differences between the wealthy Crawley's and their massive staff. This is a somewhat idealised view and everyone is surprisingly polite and respectful, except when the plotline demands.
The movie starts with the delivery of a letter from Buckingham Palace. The King and Queen are intending to visit, and this throws the staff into a frenzy. This is a huge event for everyone, and the stress of preparations, having to adapt to working with the royal staff, and meetings with old friends and enemies create mystery, scandal and romance...
There are several side plots and stories showing that however much money you were born into, you can still have problems and difficulties to face, including some which will never be an issue to the serving classes. The characters are all very likeable and the whole movie has a very quaint air. I can see why it is so popular.
Downton Abbey is a relaxing and relatively peaceful movie which has a good story as well an historic appeal. You care about the characters, who are mostly very nice people, and you hope for them that the royal visit goes well - although it would be a short film if everything went to plan!
