Disgruntled teenager Yi is struggling with life a little after losing her Father. She lives with her Mother and Grandmother, and takes on lots of different odd-jobs to save up to try and take a trip that her Dad had planned to take with her. One day while hiding in her den on the roof, she discovers a Yeti, who has escaped from a science lab.

The Yeti is friendly and cute, and just wants to go home. He's also a bit magic and has some tricks up his sleeve involving plants. Along with her friends Jin and Peng, Yi embarks on an epic journey to return her Yeti, Everest, to his mountain home and his family - with the scientists and money men in hot pursuit...

I've shared a short movie of the cooking segment of the Blu-ray here, and around this post are some handy recipe sheets and activity sheets for you to print off...

We watched as a family and all really enjoyed the movie. The story has some similiarity to Chinese traditional religious tales - including Journey To The West by Wu Ch'eng-en, stories about the real-life journey of Hsuan Tsangof, a 7th-century monk. All kinds of exciting and improbable events occur during their trip, including a flight on a giant dandelion.

There are poignant moments. Main character Yi has lost her father, and playing her violin reminds her of him, so she struggles to play in front of people. It's something a lot of bereaved children will relate to. One of our children completely stopped singing when they lost their sister.

Everest isn't simply a great big hairy Abominable snowman, he is a real personality. He cares for the children, he loves Yi's music, he loves nature, and he just wants to go home.

Released in time for the half term, Abominable is out now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. DVD (rrp £10.99) and Blu-ray (rrp £14.99). From all good stockists, including online at Amazon (affiliate links below).

  1. Also a veggie for many years (decades, actually), I love how Chinese restaurants use tofu in their dishes. It used to be just sweet and sour but, these days, many more innovative dishes to choose.

  11. My partner makes a wonderful vegetable and noodle stir fry. Always use whole wheat noodles as I find they don’t go as soft as normal egg noodles.

  17. I'm also vegetarian and have never had a pork bun! Many years ago, in San Francisco, I went to a Chinese vegetarian restaurant and had vegetarian mock Peking Duck. It was absolutely delicious. My husband (a meat eater) said the crispy "skin" and "flesh" were exactly like duck. Sadly, I've never found a Chinese restaurant in the UK that serves this dish, although maybe now plant-based food is becoming more popular, someone will bring this dish over here.
