The World's Strongest Medium Roast Coffee... Sent for review by Black Insomnia Coffee Company

I've been a coffee drinker for as long as I can remember, but I like it watery, and at times I've even been a decaf drinker, so being sent a selection of the world's strongest Medium Roast Coffee for review is an interesting one! My partner and my oldest son like a robust coffee to get themselves going, so I reckoned they'd like it... and I was intrigued as to whether I'd hate it.

Black Insomnia have also just launched Nespresso-compatible coffee pods which are 100% home compostable, and I'm a sucker for a green alternative. They sent us a selection from their range to take a look...

Beans, ground coffee, really clever coffee drip bags and those compostable coffee capsules. I don't have a coffee machine which takes these pods, so my partner will take these into the office for when he has to go in. Full marks for packaging too - plastic free, they even use paper tape.

The blurb says "Black Insomnia is a very strong coffee made using traditional barrel roasting techniques to create a smooth, rich taste from a mix of carefully selected Arabica and Robusta beans." It is 4 times the strength of typical high street coffee. This is definitely something you should think of more like an espresso, and savour a small mug, rather than glug it down.

Made by Black Insomnia Coffee Company Limited, this coffee is certified as having 1105mg of caffeine per 12oz mug (standard size). The drip bags actually suggest 150ml, and if you don't have any small coffee cups, this is the perfect size for a small child's mug...

It's nice coffee. It is genuinely medium roast, and although you can taste that it's strong, you actually have no idea just how strong as you drink it. It is a nice rounded flavour and not bitter at all... It's a 3/3 for taste here, and I didn't need another coffee for the rest of the day...

Black Insomnia are looking to become even more eco-considerate. CEO, Jim Walker said “We are delighted to be launching our new coffee pods at this time, and we’re now looking for other ways to help protect the environment, including rain forest protection and Fairtrade Foundation accreditation.”

The new pods are an eco-friendly alternative to standard aluminium and plastic. They can be disposed of alongside home food waste and will compost in the garden within six weeks. Black Insomnia Coffee say that research shows 39,000 coffee capsules are produced every minute globally, and 29,000 end up in landfill. That is a lot, and there's really no excuse for it nowadays.

Black Insomnia home compostable Coffee PODS for Nespresso Machines are £19.95 for 50 pods, including free shipping. Black Insomnia Ground Coffee or Beans £14.95, 16 Revolutionary Black Insomnia 16 Coffee Drip Bags £9.95. Find out more and buy on the Black Insomnia website
