COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News Weekend Update 12th / 13th June 2021.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News Weekend Update 12th / 13th June 2021.

The UK added 7,490 cases today and now has reported a total of 4,565,813 positive cases of COVID-19. We completed 945,090 tests yesterday.

The counter says 41,551,201 people had been given at least one dose of a vaccine in the UK by midnight last night. 29,792,658 people had received 2 doses and are fully vaccinated.

1,089 people were in hospital on Thursday 10th, with 158 using a ventilator. As this information isn't updated over the weekend, we really can't gauge how it's going. Admissions have been rising steadily by around 10 per day average, to 187 on 8th June.

In the 24 hours up until 5pm yesterday, we officially reported the loss of another 8 people who have tested positive to COVID-19 within 28 days, making a total of 127,904 losses of life in all settings.

Rep. Of Ireland 266,819 (+315) cases and 4,941 losses of life.

There have now been a total of 176,590,986 reported cases worldwide. The number of people who have lost their lives worldwide to COVID-19 is 3,816,480. Already 160,607,442 people have recovered.

130621 Total vaccinations in the UK to date

"Thank you, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for inviting me to join the G7 UK Summit. We're in the race of our lives, but it’s not a fair race, & most countries have barely left the starting line. We look to the G7 and G20 to ACTogether & lead the way towards VaccinEquity.
To truly end the COVID19 pandemic, our goal must be to vaccinate at least 70% of the world’s population by the time the G7 meets in Germany next year. To do that, we need 11 billion doses. We welcome the generous announcements made about donations of vaccines, but we need more & now."
Dr Tedros, Head of WHO, special guest at the G7 in Cornwall.

"I’m very pleased to announce that G7 leaders have pledged over 1 billion doses to the world’s poorest countries – another big step towards vaccinating the world.
This weekend the G7 came together. And together we are building back better, greener and fairer from the pandemic."
Boris Johnson, UK PM.

More cases of Delta variant in the UK have been in children aged 10-19 than any other age group. It's taken forever for Public Health England to give us a breakdown, but I've included it below and it shows that up until 7th June:
2,791 Delta cases had been detected in children aged 0-9
7,750 in ages 10-19
7,620 in ages 20-29
Just 476 in ages 70+

Professor Andrew Hayward, of the UK Government SAGE (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) was on the telly this morning, and told Andrew Marr that there will be a substantial increase in COVID infections, but while we will have more cases, the big question is whether it will translate into hospitalisations.
I'm guessing he's been told to get out there and gently ease people into the bad news...

Sky News Australia have an exclusive, with footage of live bats in the Wuhan lab from back in 2017. This is controversial mainly because Peter Daszac, one of the World Health Organisation Origins Of COVID team, was adamant last December that they didn't have complete bats either live or dead in the lab. (Standard behaviour would be to take samples from live bats in the wild, and then re-release them where they had been caught.)
However Mr Daszac also admitted he hadn't actually thought to ask the Chinese when he was there...

Mucormycosis, the Black Fungus which is affecting recovering patients in India, is getting a lot of press.
Evidence is mounting very swiftly to support initial understanding about this. It occurs almost entirely in recovering patients whose sugar, or glucose, levels are too high, and is related to use of unnecessary steroids.
If you live in a country where you are responsible for your own medication, don't take everything you can lay your hands on. Steroids are useful for SOME COVID patients (mainly those on oxygen), but more steroids, steroids when you don't need them, don't usually mean a better outcome.
If you're diabetic and have COVID, pay attention to your glucose levels while you're ill and recovering.

The Queen celebrated her official birthday on Saturday with a low-scale Trooping Of The Colour, and about 1,000 new OBEs and CBEs and other 3 letter acronym awards. Many were given to people who have been invaluable to others during the pandemic - well done to all of you.
Recipients included 7 of the Oxford University scientists who have played such a huge part in the UK COVID response, and the whole world's COVID response, with the development of affordable and easy to store treatments and vaccines.

Not much news today - the big UK news will come tomorrow. The remaining restrictions mainly concern social distancing measures, mask-wearing and personal contact, and tomorrow we hear what the decision is on relaxing those restrictions. Several papers are reporting a 4 week delay is anticipated.

As I'm in North Manchester, my eldest currently has COVID (he's okay, and fresh Lemsips were delivered earlier), and I'm well aware how well Delta has passed through some local schools, I guess I might be biased. I'm just not in any rush to stop wearing a mask in the shop right now. Nor do I even want to doorstep visit my ailing mother. If I lived in Cornwall, I'd probably find the idea of continuing restrictions insane. Everyone has their own experience, and whatever Boris says tomorrow, some people will be very fairly upset. Be kind, we ALL want the same thing in the end. We're on the same side.

And if you do live somewhere that has barely been touched by COVID, or is relatively COVID-free right now... you just stay that way.

Some numbers. They all sing, and laugh, and dance, and cry:
