Today I've decided to take a moment away from all of the troubles of the world and focus on something fun, relaxing and calming. I haven't written about LEGO in quite a while, but just now seems a great time to pick that back up...
I may not have written about it, but we are still just as keen on LEGO here as we ever were, and we've had a few new and exciting sets over the last few months. Times are tighter and pretty much everyone has less money in their pockets these days, so most of our more recent sets have been gifts. Personally I avoid most of the cheaper imitations because the building techniques and quality control can be hit and miss, so being smart with your purchases is always a win. There are still bargains to be found, and some pretty good LEGO discount vouchers out there, or you can buy direct from LEGO.com and collect extra Insiders points towards free LEGO sets and rewards (you can also collect LEGO Insiders points when you register sets you've bought in any store or even received as gifts).
So, what have we been building? As I have for the past decade or so, I got the latest Christmas Winter Village set for my birthday in November. This year it was Santa's Post Office set 10339 and I posted some photos on my Instagram page, although it was pointed out to me I didn't actually share any photos of the entire set (Sorry - I'll remember next year!).
My partner also gave me the World Of Wonders set 40585, which was a gift with his other purchases and includes miniature models depicting 4 of the world's most impressive and celebrated sites - the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, the Parthenon and Petra’s Al-Khazneh. This was a very sweet little build and the models are incredibly detailed, especially considering their size.
From the tiny to the massive - for Christmas our grown up children bought my partner and I Vincent Van Gogh - The Starry Night set 21333. This is a real treat, and an absolutely gorgeous set. We want to dedicate a lazy weekend to building this together at our leisure, so it's been hard to resist, but we haven't opened it yet. The Starry Night is a LEGO Ideas set with 2,316 pieces, and we have every intention to mount this on the wall once completed - out of direct sunlight and hopefully in a spot where it won't collect a lot of dust!
For Christmas I bought my partner the Jaws set. He's wanted to make this for years, and was delighted when it came up on LEGO Ideas, even more so when it was chosen for production. A 1,497 piece set which includes the Orca and all the main characters - Chief Brody, Quint and Hooper, and of course the shark...
If you like LEGO boats, or just boats, then you'll be pleased to know the RNLI Shannon Class Lifeboat LEGO Ideas model has achieved 10,000 supporters and will be put forward as a prospective official LEGO set. That's one my partner would love to have, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's next Christmas sorted...
As well as The Starry Night yet to build, over the past couple of years I've been given several LEGO flowers sets as gifts by some of our children and my partner, and I saved most of them because I wanted to build them once we had a house. We spent a year between homes, staying with relatives, which was a tough year and taught us a lot. It wasn't the time for building massive models, for starters we had nowhere to put them! We've had our new home now for 6 months, and we have almost emptied all of our belongings out of storage, and made our home just as we want it. As soon as that work is finally done, we'll get to spend more time playing.
My intention has always been to build all my flower sets and create a big vase of flowers (affiliate link). Something special to celebrate the fact that we have finally finished moving in to our new house. Flowers which will never go brown or droop, and are every bit as beautiful as the real thing... Watch this space...
What have YOU been building lately?
