COVID-19, Measles, HPAI H5N1 Avian Flu and other virus UK and World News Update 17th April 2025

COVID-19 Coronavirus and other virus UK and World News Update 17th April 2025

World Health Organisation members, after over 3 years of discussions, have agreed the wording for the legally binding Pandemic Treaty. The draft agreement will be up for consideration (and hopefully accepted) at the upcoming World Health Assembly next month.
This is only the 2nd time such a treaty has been drawn up, the first being a tobacco control agreement in 2003.
Under terms of the treaty member countries will share data about pathogens swiftly via the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing System (PABS). 10% of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics will be given to WHO, and another 10% will be supplied at affordable prices.

During week ending 4 April 2025 (Week 14) 11,448 deaths were registered in England and Wales.
· 8.4% higher than expected (889 more deaths)
· 13.5% involved influenza or pneumonia (1,540 deaths)
· 0.7% involved COVID19 (82 deaths)
UK ONS
This is the first time deaths have been above expected for a while, so could just be a very bad week. We'll see where we are in 2 weeks time. I am sorry for everyone who has lost someone.

Since 1st October 2024 the UK Government has invested an extra £82m and recruited an extra 1,503 GPs.
"When the government came into office, unnecessary red tape was preventing practices from hiring newly qualified GPs, meaning more than 1,000 were due to graduate into unemployment. At the same time, there were also 1,399 fewer fully qualified GPs than a decade prior, showing how years of underfunding and neglect had eroded GP services."
When I left England you had more chance of getting a same-day appointment with a unicorn than a GP. In Scotland we pay more tax and have more doctors. Do you see any improvement yet in England?

Scotland has offered NHS staff an 8% pay rise over 2 years (4.25% this year, 3.75 next year, with a guarantee it'll be at least 1% above inflation). It will be put to a vote and most likely accepted.
The Westminster Government say they will offer the other UK nations up to 2.8%. Health union UNISON is not happy and called it "ludicrous".

It isn't just DOGE in the US cutting Government and medical staff, the UK appears to have joined in:
"NHS Confederation has said the speed and size of cuts which trusts in England are being asked to make is “eye watering” and health leaders are “very concerned” at possible patient impact. The comments come after recent news of 1300 admin jobs being cut at three trusts."
BBC Health Correspondent Hugh Pym

RFK Jr says we'll know what causes autism by September.
Brilliant. That would be amazing. Lets find out what causes Autism. Only we won't, will we, because the guy who is in charge of finding out already thinks he has an answer, and its not correct, and it's been done to death already. Not only is he starting with a conclusion and looking for a link, he's now on a really REALLY short deadline. People have been trying to find out why some people are autistic for decades, but we are going to have an answer in 4 months. Shame, because this could have been money pumped into fascinating and incredibly useful research.
Yesterday in a press conference, RFK Jr announced:
"We're gonna announce a series of new studies to identify precisely what the environmental toxins are that are causing it."
"This has not been done before."
He clarified he believes environmental toxins in the air, water, food or medicine cause autism. Best of luck with that Bob.

RFK Jr stunned most of the sensible people yet again last Friday when talking about the measles outbreak in West Texas. He announced that:
“I would compare it to what’s happening in Europe now. They’ve had 127,000 cases and 37 deaths. And so, what we’re doing right here in the United States is a model for the rest of the world.”
No it isn’t. These are last March's figures from the WHO Europe region, which covers 53 countries, including Romania (where only 71% of children have received both doses of MMR) and Kazakhstan - both of which had large measles outbreaks in 2023/24.
The WHO Europe Region encompasses a population of nearly a billion people from Portugal to Russia. The USA has a population of just over 340m (just over 1/3 the size), and compared to a lot of places it is very wealthy. I'm not saying WHO Europe region is perfect, it clearly isn’t, but no-one should be dying from measles in 2025 in the USA. Saying it is a model for the rest of the world is like saying a self-driving Tesla running someone over is great, because Dave hit 12 people last week in his 20 year old Lada.

Shall we have 3? Why not. US Health secretary RFK Jr. last week also deeply offended scientists and medics the world over, when on CBS News he declared that "for respiratory illnesses, the single antigen vaccines have never worked", and that's why he's delaying full licensing on the Novovax COVID vaccination (it's still under an emergency licence).
Errrm. Well, this is why we have testing Bob, and then keep on collecting more data forever, and the numbers disagree.
COVID vaccines, like many others, including RSV vaccines, target a specific part of the virus (single antigen), often the bit which attaches to the human.
Stanley Plotkin, a co-developer of the rotavirus and rubella vaccines, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania said to Stat News:
"This is another example of Kennedy being an ignoramus about vaccination, if not other things as well. And you can quote me on that.”
I shall.

Officials in Ontario, Canada have begun suspending school pupils who have not been vaccinated - which is a mandatory for state education in Canada. Around 9,000 pupils in Waterloo and 10,000 in Toronto received suspension orders in January and February, requiring them to update their medical records with vaccinations or exemptions.
Over 1,600 pupils in Waterloo have already been suspended, and the first 574 in Toronto have letters on the way.

A second child in Texas has died from measles.
RFK Jr attended the funeral. Ironic given his stance on the vaccine which would have had a 97% chance of saving that child's life.
Measles kills 1-3 of every 1,000 people who catch it, and this is the 3rd death from measles this outbreak, which probably gives us some indication of just how many people are not coming forward when they or their children become infected. And that is why you don't give the parents a hard time if they do seek medical care. It could save a life.

While in Texas to go to the funeral of the 3rd person to die from measles during this outbreak, an 8 year old girl named Daisy, RFK Jr actually said the words:
"The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine."
Thank heavens. Common sense finally, but is it enough? It has certainly riled the anti-vaxx communities. It you want to see some incredibly crazy stuff, go and look at the replies they're giving him now.
He didn’t however say he'd been wrong previously, he didn’t tell people to vaccinate their kids, and he didn't say sorry.
RFK Jr went on to say he sent CDC teams in March, who ran vaccination clinics, helped with contact tracing, supply of medicines and treatments etc, and since that time hospitalisations have flattened. Errrm. No they hadn't. I'm not sure why he thought that was wise to say, because anyone could look at the numbers and see it wasn't true.
Obviously many CDC workers, including community support teams, were laid off in the DOGE cuts. At the request of Texas Governor Abbott, a new CDC team will be deployed to the area.

A lot of the anti-vaccine comments below RFK Jr's statements come from people who don't understand some very simple maths.
They claim more people died from the effects of measles vaccines than from measles over the past few years. They say 4 US citizens died from measles vaccines last year (officially it's zero, but whatever), and none died from measles. Some of you may have spotted the flaw in this logic already.
Vaccinations are 97% effective at preventing measles, so only 3% can catch it, spread it, die from it. With vaccine coverage very high, and only a small percentage even able to spread measles, chains of infection can't travel and outbreaks are almost impossible. It's a very rare chance you'll ever come across it - this is herd immunity. No-one dies from measles. Hurrah!
If you vaccinate tens of millions of people then some will have bad side effects and may even die, but give tens of millions of people ANYTHING and the same is true. Yogurt, peanuts, bread, chocolate biscuits, anything. Some will die.
Before the MMR back in the 1950's, when the US population was less than half what it is now, 500 people a year in the USA died from measles. On top thousands were left blind, deaf or brain damaged.
Even if the anti-vaxxers claim of 4 people dying from vaccination last year is true, which is better? Vaccinations or letting everyone catch measles?

The latest Measles stats in the US outbreaks are:
Texas - to 15th April: 561 cases, 58 hospitalised, 2 fatalities
Kansas - to 16th April: 37 cases, 1 hospitalised (5 vaccinated)
New Mexico - to 15th April: 63 cases, 5 hospitalised, 1 fatality (6 vaccinated)
Oklahoma - to 15th April: 12 cases (none vaccinated)

The Texas measles outbreak includes at least 7 children at a Lubbock daycare which has 200 children on the roll, including children too young to be fully vaccinated.

In Canada the total to 29th March was 731, with 116 cases reported in the week 23rd to 29th March from Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Total for Ontario was 656.

And for fairness... during 2025
England - to 10th April: 213 laboratory confirmed cases (London 52, Bristol 34, Leeds 29)
Scotland - to 16th April: 23 laboratory confirmed cases
Northern Ireland - to 31st March: 18 cases
I can't find data for Wales, nor any record of any cases in 2025.

Mexico is suffering a measles outbreak, with 934 probable and confirmed cases up until 4th April. They have reported that a 31 year old man has died. He was also a member of the Mennonite community - the group badly affected in Texas, US and Ontario, Canada - and his illness is linked to the outbreak in Texas.

Michigan has reported 9 cases of mumps... fun times ahead. They are reminding everyone to ensure children get their MMR jabs.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) continues to surge in the USA. Cases are have passed 7,000 and are rising. I don't really try to scare people, so last report I said it was most dangerous for tiny babies because it can make it hard from them to drink their milk. Well, also they can break ribs, rupture themselves, develop hernias, vomit so much they lose weight, they can't breathe, they can have fits/seizures/convulsions. And most of those are true whatever age you catch whooping cough.
Mexico is also facing a surge in Whooping Cough, with 2,549 probable cases (696 confirmed) and 37 losses of life reported up until week 14 (week ending 4th April).
This is another vaccine-preventable disease folks (98% effective in the first year).

There have now been 7 HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) H5N1 outbreaks at premises near Thirsk, Yorkshire, UK.
Because of additional outbreaks, from Monday 7 April the regional AIPZ mandating enhanced biosecurity and housing for kept birds currently in force across Cheshire, City of Kingston Upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Norfolk, North Yorkshire, Shropshire, Suffolk, Worcestershire and York was extended to cover Cumbria, County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
An England wide AIPZ mandating enhanced biosecurity remains in force.
Total outbreaks since 17th November 2024:
England 56 H5N1 and 1 H5N5
Scotland 2 H5N1
Northern Ireland 4 H5N1
Wales so far has detected no outbreaks.

Researchers from the University of New South Wales, Australia, have done a massive study to work out how bird flu spreads - specifically H5N1.
Looking at outbreaks and reported detections from 2020 to 2023, they studied wild bird migrations and global poultry trade, as well as "hotspot analysis to identify areas of significant clustering of H5N1 outbreak points over different bird families".
Their findings showed that there was 'interplay' between wild birds travelling and poultry outbreaks, and that movement of both wild and farmed birds "significantly contribute to global H5N1 transmission".
The spread patterns revealed that the avian influenza had started in Asian countries, but none of the birds they studied travelled to Europe, so the route across is unknown. Once it reached Europe, they could see which migratory birds spread it across the world, including Europe to Greenland to North America to South America like a relay, passing to different bird species.

Poland has more Avian Flu outbreaks than any other EU country, with almost 80 at last count. Polish authorities have decided on national emergency measures, and have presented a detailed 14 point plan to the European Commission (EC). The EC have acknowledged this and accepted Poland's measures. They say no EU-wide restrictions will be implemented for now, but they will enhance surveillance, and reconsider if the situation worsens.
The 14 point plan was drawn up by the Ministry of Agriculture, with input from a range of experts, including the National Chamber of Poultry Farming and the Polish Veterinary Inspection. It details measures including stringent biosecurity, extending time between breeding cycles, monitoring of farms by vets, increasing the size of risk zones around outbreaks from 7km to 12km, and a 40 day break after disinfection of infected premises.

40 days is the period of the original 'quarantine' and where we get the word from (quarantina, in 14th century Venetian and French).

A 3 year old Mexican girl from Durango has become Mexico's first confirmed human case of H5N1, and also sadly their first fatality.
It is not known exactly how she became infected as she had no known exposure, and she received rapid medical care, including antivirals, but sadly it wasn't enough and she died from multiple organ failure.

Latest H5N1 situation in the US. Sadly it is not slowing down...
The US has now reported a total of 1,021 cattle herds infected with H5N1 Avian Flu across 17 states (31 new cases in the last 30 days, across 4 states)
No new human cases, this remains at 70 confirmed, 7 probable and 1 loss of life.

Just to throw a spanner in the mix, China has reported another 3 human infections with HPAI H9N2, bringing the total to 5 this year. H9N2 has been causing occasional single person infections in China for several years, last year they reported a total of 11. It’s usually contracted from poultry, and often small children, although in all 3 new cases they are not certain how it was caught.
Fingers crossed we aren't all looking the wrong way with bird flu...

Wastewater testing, the canary in the coal mine for detecting diseases, has been hit by DOGE cuts. In San Diego it's been terminated.
What could possibly go wrong?

CBS news are reporting that Milwaukee has requested help from the US CDC regarding potential lead poisoning at a school, and was sent the response:
"I sincerely regret to inform you that due to the complete loss of our Lead Program, we will be unable to support you with this."
The official word is that this department was reinstated. Unofficial word is that it really hasn't...

4 cattle farms in Hungary have returned positive results for Foot and Mouth Disease - their first outbreak in 50 years. The farms are near the Austria and Slovakia borders, so this has triggered mass culling of animals, closure of border crossings and general alarm. The Hungarian Chief Of Staff has suggested it may be a biological attack, and lab testing is ongoing.
Harmless to humans, Foot and Mouth affects animals with cloven hoofs (cows, sheep, pigs, goats, deer etc). Rarely actually fatal, it weakens animals and makes it incredibly painful for them to eat or walk, so it's a horrible disease which can leave them lame, underweight and poor producers of milk or meat.

The US, like the UK, is also having a resurgence of TB.
TB comes in 2 types - active or latent. You can have latent TB for years, or even decades, with no symptoms and you may never even know. In around 5-10% of people at some point latent TB turns into active disease and they become infectious and very ill. Treatment for both types is the same.
An active case was identified at Hartsville High School in Carolina this year, and testing began to see how far it had spread.  By 4th April 280 people had been tested and 56 had latent TB infection.

Small images of various Meat and dairy products are now banned from being brought into UK from EU

The UK has reported a single human case of mpox 1b in North East England with no travel history or known links to any other cases. All contacts have already been followed up and no other cases identified.
Mpox clade 1 infections were previously considered high risk because of the high fatality rate in Sub-saharan Africa, but over the past few months the fatality rate has been low, so it has been downgraded. This is still a concern though.
Mpox is only usually spread by close contact, so it's a relief no other cases have been found, although obviously we'd all like to know where this case came from. The UK HSA will be on high alert in case there is any undetected community spread, and this isn't just a random one-off event.

The Mpox outbreak in DRC is slowing down. In total they have detected over 96,000 cases and 1,700 people have died. Whilst this is tragic for all concerned, it is a fatality rate of 1.8%, much MUCH lower than previous Clade 1 Mpox, and that has been reducing by the month, so last week only 4 people succumbed compared to 1,453 new cases. Vaccinations, vigilance to treat cases quickly, and refining treatments is working to save lives.

It may be nothing, but in the area where DRC had the 'unknown illness' panic which tested positive for malaria and nothing else could be found (North Kivu), they are reporting "abnormal mortality of hippos and buffalo in Virunga Park". There is an ongoing veterinary investigation.

Réunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean, has a major outbreak of Chikungunya. This is a mosquito-borne virus which is rarely fatal, and very much under-studied. Some people experience very mild symptoms and may never even know they've been infected, but in others Chikungunya causes really severe joint pain, as well as symptoms including swelling, headaches, a rash, nausea and tiredness.
According to WHO, "up to 50% of patients can experience severe disabilities affecting daily life that can last for years".
The population of La Reunion is only around 890,000 people, and they have reported over 33,000 cases since January. That is 1 in every 26 people. 6 people have died. WHO and La Reunion health officials are considering use of a (late stage) trial vaccine in an attempt to limit those affected.

Small images with symptoms of scarlet fever including pink cheeks, bumpy rash, strawberry tongue, unwell, temperature

2 weeks ago I mentioned antibiotic-resistant Gonorrhea - a problem which is worldwide and affecting the UK. Well, it also affects the USA, and it was reported last week that the federal lab at the CDC which tracks and tests Sexually Transmitted Infection samples has been shut down as part of Trump and Musks cuts. Sooooo... there are now up to 30 freezers full of samples with no owner, and no-one to test them.
Still, if you don't test, you don't have cases, right?

You may have recently heard of Hantavirus, because it is what killed actor Gene Hackman's wife Betsy, leading to the tragic death of Mr Hackman, who had alzheimer's and was unable to access medical care.
Previously it was known that Hantavirus in New Mexico was almost always spread by Deer Mice, and very occasionally by a couple of other species. A peer-reviewed study by University of New Mexico released last week found Hantavirus in over 1/4 (27%) of 1,471 small mammals studied - in total 32 different species were infected, and had virus in their tissues and faeces. This news is a bit of a shock.
Infection via droppings or a bite or scratch can cause Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS) in humans, which has a fatality rate of 38%. It can also cause Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal syndrome, a disease with several different strains which are between 1% and 15% fatal, but all take a long time for recovery.
Detected human Hantavirus infection is still rare, with around 150,000 cases a year (mostly mild strains) so researchers now want to know why most human cases are in certain areas? Do some populations have immunity? Is weather really important? Is it mostly spread by poo-infected dust? So many questions.
There are several different Hantavirus, spread all around the world (the UK has 2 types, spread by brown rats and voles), so this isn't just a New Mexico issue.
A 2014 UK study found around 3% of the population had Hantavirus antibodies, and therefore previous exposure to the virus. This was similar for sewage workers, farmers, pest controllers and vets. Somewhat surprisingly almost 1/3 (32.9%) of pet rat owners had antibodies...

Chickenpox (Varicella) was added to the UK childhood vaccination programme in 2024 (at least 36 countries already vaccinate against Varicella). It's likely to become a fairly rare disease, and has been added to the list of notifiable diseases.
Most people who catch chickenpox are poorly for a week or so, with scabby spots that can leave scars. Those spots can be in very intimate and awkward places, including in the mouth and other inside bits. They can become infected and can even have to be removed by surgery (if they prevent eating or going to the toilet for example). Occasionally chickenpox causes complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis, and it is very rarely fatal (1 in 60,000).
After chickenpox infection the live Varicella virus hides inside the body in the nerves of the spinal column, in a 'resting state' and can re-emerge as shingles, sometimes decades later. You cannot 'catch' shingles, you can only catch chickenpox. Varicella can also very rarely cause meningitis, as happened with my partner 12 years ago.

The physicians lament - no-one can recommend a good physician who doesn't believe in vaccines, just as you can't recommend a good physicist who doesn't believe in gravity

A study from last year is making the rounds again, and bears repeating.
Researchers from BHF Data Science Centre and led by the Universities of Cambridge, Bristol and Edinburgh studied the medical records of 45,700,000 adults in England between December 2020 and January 2022, and found that heart attacks and strokes DROPPED after COVID vaccinations.
I don't think anyone was expecting a drop in numbers, but it’s clear evidence that COVID VACCINES DO NOT CAUSE HEART ATTACKS OR STROKES.
Even more unexpectedly, after second vaccinations and booster jabs, risk of heart attacks and strokes went down even further.
Arterial thrombosis (a factor in many heart attacks and strokes) was 10% lower in the 13-24 weeks after the first dose of both the AstraZeneca or Pfizer jab, and after the 2nd dose it was reduced by 27% for AstraZeneca and 20% for Pfizer.
Are vaccinations protective? Do COVID jabs cause the body to do other things that are beneficial in different ways? Is it just COVID jabs or other jabs? Are the results simply indicative of the amount of unvaccinated people damaged by COVID infection itself? We still don't really know, although research is still ongoing on this one.

Remember that the UK Government were told by a court that they had to release the names of those who unsuccessfully used the COVID VIP lane to bid for PPE contracts? Well, the list is out, and includes Nick Candy's company Candy Capital Ltd. Never heard of him? Not surprising. He is however the Treasurer for Reform UK... and earlier the same year (2020) had donated £100,000 to the Tory party.
Other Tory donors who used the VIP lane included clothing retailer Next, Lady Xuelin Bates (wife of a Conservative Peer) and a dental clinic chain. At least the dental chain probably understood what constituted proper PPE, unlike half the PPE actually supplied through the VIP lane, which was deemed unusable.
Thanks to Democracy For Sale for fighting that one for us.

Over the past couple of weeks RFK Jr has said some choice things about autism and people with autism. So what have we learnt?
1. RFK Jr hasn't really spent much actual time with people who have autism, although it seems to be his special interest.
2. RFK Jr has a reputation to uphold, and he's going to do his darndest to prove himself right.
3. RFK Jr is quite rude and lacking compassion or empathy. He doesn't seem to be able to consider other people's feelings or emotions.
4. RFK Jr appears to be scared of autism.
5. RFK Jr believes autism is caused by something from outside the body getting in and changing the human. He does not believe all humans are simply naturally different from each other.
6. People with autism can have talents and skills the likes of which RFK Jr can only dream of. His sweeping statements about autistic people are referring to (amongst others)...Chris Packham, Bella Ramsey, Elon Musk, Anthony Hopkins, Albert Einstein, Dan Aykroyd, Tim Burton, Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Charles Darwin, Nikola Tesla, Stephen Spielberg, Thomas Edison, Ludwig Van Beethoven, George Orwell, Some of you, Some of my family, Some of your families, Some of my friends. Now go away and think about what you are saying Bob.

It's the weekend... well, not quite because I am a day early, but a lot of people have an extra day off tomorrow. Thank you to all of you who will be at work, keeping us safe and the world turning. Do not eat too much chocolate, don't try and do all the DIY using tools you don't know the name of, and get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine! It's free entertainment and it's good for you. Maybe a little treat on top, you've earned it... Happy Easter!! Back in 2 weeks...
